In a memo dated April 24 2020, the UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama wrote to all staff and sought their consent for voluntary salary cut for the purpose of the families and individuals that have been adversely affected by the global pandemic Covid19.
The move follows the President's example and directive to all public service workers. The President and his deputy pledged to take home 80% salary cut since the coronavirus pandemic hit the country to help the less fortunate in the country.
During the covid19 pandemic, a good percentage of kenyans have lost their jobs and/or their means of providing for their families. Most kenyans have been given unpaid leave by their employers and others are struggling to make ends meet because of the curfew and the regulations given by the government to curb the spread of the corona virus.
At the University of Nairobi, those that have signed the consent form, their salaries will be deducted by the percentage that they have indicated in the form for the next three months starting April 2020.The decucted amount will go towards helping the less fortunate in the country.
The UoN Mombasa campus has also announced a drive where they have appealed to the public to contribute towards the vulnerable families in the county. The contribution aims to provide food to those that have been affected by this pandemic and for one reason or the other are not able to put food on the table.
